# Kokiri Forest — Ocarina of Time remake (Switch 2)

Chapter 1 · Child Link · Overworld. Updated Nov 1, 2026.

A fairy named Navi wakes Link with a summons from the Great Deku Tree, but Mido refuses to let anyone visit the guardian unarmed. Scrape together a sword and a shield around the village, then walk the trail to the Great Deku Tree and hear his request.

**Goal:** Find a sword and shield, then visit the Great Deku Tree.

**Rewards:** Kokiri Sword, Deku Shield

## 1. A Fairy at Last

1. The Great Deku Tree sends the fairy Navi to rouse you. Climb down the ladder from your treehouse, and Saria greets you at the bottom, delighted that you finally have a fairy of your own.
2. (Tip) Navi is your hint system. She flies toward things worth checking, and you can call on her any time for a reminder of your current goal.
3. (Tip) Lock on to people to talk to them and to enemies to circle and strike them. Locking on is the backbone of every fight in the game, so practice it early.
4. Explore the village freely. The Kokiri share basic tips on moving, climbing and fighting, and the signs in the training area describe more techniques.
5. Try the narrow trail that leads to the Great Deku Tree. Mido plants himself in the way and says nobody gets through without a sword and a shield.
6. (Watch out) A Kokiri boy also blocks the bridge out to Hyrule Field. You can't leave the forest until you've answered the Great Deku Tree's call.

## 2. The Kokiri Sword

1. Head to the Forest Training Center, the fenced hillside on the village's west side. At the far end of the fence line, crawl through the small hole at the base of the wall.
2. (Watch out) A large boulder rolls through the narrow passages beyond. Duck into one of the alcoves as it approaches, then keep moving once it rumbles past. A hit only costs a little health and knocks you back.
3. Wind left and then right through the passages to reach a treasure chest.
4. (You get) You obtain the Kokiri Sword. Check the Equipment subscreen to make sure it's equipped.
5. (Tip) A couple of Blue Rupees sit among the tall weeds past the boulder. Grab them; you need cash for the next step.

## 3. Earning the Deku Shield

1. The Kokiri Shop sells the Deku Shield for 40 Rupees, so start collecting.
2. (Tip) Cut grass and bushes, lift rocks, and look behind the houses for loose Rupees. Mido's house has four treasure chests that are worth a look.
3. (Tip) Jump across the square stepping stones in the water near the shop; landing on them makes Rupees appear. Walk in and out of any house to reset them and repeat.
4. (Tip) Your wallet tops out at 99 Rupees for now, so there's no point hoarding beyond that.
5. With 40 Rupees in hand, buy the shield at the Kokiri Shop.
6. (You get) You obtain the Deku Shield. Hold it up to block attacks and bounce projectiles such as Deku Nuts back at whoever fired them.
7. (Watch out) The Deku Shield is wooden and burns up if fire touches it. If you lose it, buy a replacement here.
8. (Collectible) Later, once you carry a Bottle of bugs, drop one on the soft soil behind the Kokiri Shop to make a Gold Skulltula crawl out.

## 4. Past Mido

1. Go back to Mido with both items equipped. He sulks, but he keeps his word and steps aside.
2. Deku Babas guard the short trail beyond. Lock on and cut them down; the withered ones that don't lunge drop Deku Sticks, and others can leave Deku Nuts.
3. (Tip) Deku Sticks are breakable clubs that hit hard and can carry a flame from a torch. Deku Nuts burst in a flash that stuns most enemies. You'll lean on both in the first dungeon.
4. (Tip) Without an upgrade you can carry at most 10 Deku Sticks. The Babas grow back, so return here to restock.

## 5. The Great Deku Tree

1. Talk to the Great Deku Tree. He explains that a curse has taken hold inside him and asks you to go in and break it.
2. (Tip) Before you go in, gather a handful of Deku Sticks and Deku Nuts from the trail's Deku Babas. The dungeon uses both.
3. He opens his great mouth. Step inside to begin the first dungeon.

## Gold Skulltulas nearby

- **Behind the Know-It-All Brothers' House** (Kokiri Forest; Child Link, night only): Night only falls here after you have left the forest at least once, so return after dark and check the back wall of the Know-It-All Brothers' house. Jump-attack the Skulltula with your sword, then jump or backflip to grab the token.
- **Soft Soil Beside the Kokiri Shop** (Kokiri Forest; Child Link; needs Bugs (Bottle)): Release bugs from a bottle onto the soft soil next to the Kokiri Shop. Slash the Skulltula that digs its way out and pick up the token.
