Chapter 9 · Child Link · Overworld
The Temple of Time
With all three Spiritual Stones in hand, you return to Hyrule Castle Town just as a storm breaks and events take a dark turn. The Door of Time opens, the Master Sword leaves its pedestal, and the adventure jumps seven years ahead.

- Length
- 7 parts, 31 steps
Wrap Up Your Childhood Errands
- Tip#1.1
Drawing the Master Sword sends you seven years into the future. Before you do, it pays to learn Epona's Song from Malon at Lon Lon Ranch (you need it to claim Epona as an adult) and to own a Hylian Shield, because adult Link can't use the Deku Shield.
- Tip#1.2
Adult Link also can't use the Kokiri Sword, Fairy Slingshot, Boomerang, or Deku Sticks. Nothing is lost for good: once you have the Master Sword, you can return it to its pedestal and become a child again whenever you like.
- #1.3
With the Kokiri's Emerald, Goron's Ruby, and Zora's Sapphire in your Quest Status, cross Hyrule Field toward the castle drawbridge. A thunderstorm is rolling in.
Ambush at the Drawbridge
- #2.1
As you near the drawbridge, a cutscene begins. Impa gallops out of town on a white horse with Princess Zelda, and Zelda flings something into the moat as they race past.
- #2.2
Ganondorf thunders out after them on a black stallion and demands to know which way they went. When Link draws his sword, Ganondorf knocks him flat with a blast of magic and rides off in pursuit.
- #2.3
When you regain control, drop into the moat beside the drawbridge and swim to the glowing object in the water.
- You get#2.4
You obtain the Ocarina of Time, treasure of the royal family. It replaces the Fairy Ocarina and keeps every song you already know.
- #2.5
A vision of Zelda speaks to you through the ocarina. She asks you to take it to the Temple of Time, where the Spiritual Stones and a special melody will open the way, and she teaches you that melody.
- You get#2.6
You learn the Song of Time. You need it at the Temple of Time right now, and later it moves the blue Time Blocks stamped with the Door of Time crest in several dungeons.
Opening the Door of Time
- #3.1
Climb out of the moat, cross the drawbridge into Hyrule Market, and follow the path to the Temple of Time.
- #3.2
Walk through the entry hall to the Altar of Time in front of the sealed Door of Time. Read the inscription and the three Spiritual Stones float into their places on the altar.
- #3.3
Stand at the altar and play the Song of Time. The Door of Time grinds open.
- Tip#3.4
Save before you go further. The next few minutes are a long story sequence.
- #3.5
Walk into the chamber beyond. The Master Sword stands in the Pedestal of Time at the far end. Approach it and pull the blade free.
- You get#3.6
You obtain the Master Sword.
- #3.7
Light engulfs Link. In the cutscene that follows, Ganondorf steps through the open door behind you, gloating that you have led him straight to the Sacred Realm.
The Chamber of Sages
- #4.1
Link wakes in the Chamber of Sages. Rauru, the ancient Sage of Light, explains that you were too young to wield the Master Sword, so your spirit was sealed here for seven years until you were ready.
- #4.2
He also tells you that Ganondorf slipped into the Sacred Realm through the door you opened, and that Hyrule has suffered under his rule ever since. The other sages must be awakened to stand against him.
- You get#4.3
Rauru gives you the Light Medallion, the first of the six Sages' Medallions.
Hero of Time
- #5.1
You return to the Temple of Time as an adult. Link is now fully grown and fights with the Master Sword.
- #5.2
Sheik, a mysterious young member of the Sheikah tribe, appears and greets you as the Hero of Time.
- #5.3
Sheik speaks of five temples where sages wait to be awakened: one deep in a forest, one on a high mountain, one under a vast lake, one within the house of the dead, and one inside a goddess of the sand. Your first stop is the Forest Temple, beyond the Sacred Forest Meadow.
- Tip#5.4
Your whole inventory carries over, but child-only items are grayed out while you're an adult. They come back whenever you return to childhood.
Sheik and the Prelude of Light
- #6.1
Sheik doesn't teach you a song at this first meeting. The Prelude of Light comes after you clear the Forest Temple: the next time you step inside the Temple of Time as an adult, Sheik is waiting and teaches it to you.
- Tip#6.2
Once learned, the Prelude of Light warps you to the Temple of Time from almost anywhere you can play the ocarina. Paired with the Pedestal of Time, it makes switching ages fast.
- Tip#6.3
To become a child again, stand at the Pedestal of Time and return the Master Sword. To grow up again, draw it once more.
A Market in Ruins
- #7.1
Leave the temple. Hyrule Market has crumbled into ruin and is crawling with ReDeads, undead figures that freeze you in place with a scream and then latch on.
- Tip#7.2
ReDeads only react when you get close, so give them a wide berth. If you learned the Sun's Song, playing it stops them in their tracks for a while.
- Watch out#7.3
If a ReDead grabs you, mash buttons to break free. They drain your hearts quickly, and any others nearby will close in while you're stuck.
- #7.4
Leave through the Market entrance and cross the drawbridge into Hyrule Field. The adult half of the quest begins here.
- Tip#7.5
The guardhouse by the Market entrance now holds the Poe Collector, who later pays you for Big Poes you capture in bottles.
